Elena grabbed the handle of her cart and attempted to push past him on the left.

Václav moved instantly, stepping sideways to block her. His broad shoulder clipped the frame of her cart, sending a box of tea rattling onto the floor.

“I told you,” Václav sneered, his voice dropping all pretense of professional restraint, “you’re not moving until I see what’s under that coat.”

He reached out. His thick, calloused hand lunged forward, grabbing the lapel of Elena’s wool coat with aggressive force, pulling her forward to inspect her inner lining.

The line was crossed.

Instinct and pure, concentrated rage took over. Elena didn’t flinch, cry, or step back. With a lightning-fast motion born of explosive indignation, Elena brought her left hand up to strike his grip away, stepped firmly into his space, and swung her right open palm in a sharp, arc across the space between them.

SNAP.

The physical slap echoed through the vaulted metal ceiling of the empty supermarket like a gunshot.

The force of the blow was precise and devastating. Václav’s head snapped violently to the left, his navy security cap dislodging and tumbling to the polished floor. The impact left a bright red palm print instantly blooming across his pale, stubbled cheek.

Václav stumbled back two full steps, his heavy boots scrambling for balance against a display of canned tomatoes. His hand immediately flew to his face, his eyes wide in absolute shock and humiliation. He stared at her, breathing heavily, completely paralyzed by the sudden, fierce physical retaliation.

Elena stood her ground, her right hand still raised slightly, her chest rising and falling, her hazel eyes burning with cold, unforgiving authority.

“Touch me again,” Elena whispered, every word carved out of ice, “and the next thing hitting your face won’t be my hand—it will be a police summons for criminal assault.”
