The country club staff knew Adrian by name.
A valet took his keys. The hostess greeted him warmly. A man near the fireplace stopped to ask about his work.
Elena stood beside him, waiting to be introduced.
Adrian remembered after a moment.
“My fiancée, Elena.”
The man glanced at her ring.
“Congratulations.”
It was the simplest welcome she received all night.
Victoria sat at the center of the table in a cream silk blouse. Her gold jewelry was understated only by the standards of people who owned more.
“Elena,” she said. “You found us.”
“As invited.”
Victoria’s smile tightened.
During the first course, she asked about Elena’s parents.
Elena answered normally.
Victoria asked whether her father still worked full time.
“Yes.”
“At his age?”
“He likes his work.”
“How admirable.”
The words sounded kind.
The tone made them something else.
Later, Victoria mentioned Elena’s mother’s injury.
“I understand expenses can become difficult.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
She had discussed those expenses with him privately.
Victoria continued.
“There are ways our family could help.”
“That’s thoughtful, but they haven’t asked.”
“People often struggle to ask.”
“My parents know what they need.”
Victoria turned her wineglass slowly.
“Pride can be costly.”
Elena put down her fork.
“So can accepting help with conditions.”
A silence opened around the table.
Adrian touched her knee beneath the linen.
Not reassurance.
A request to be quiet.
Victoria noticed.
She reached into the handbag beside her chair and removed a slim envelope.
“Perhaps we should be direct.”
She placed it beside Elena’s plate.
Inside was a check.
The amount was large enough to make Elena’s mouth go dry.
A folded letter sat behind it.
The first sentence referred to an amicable end to the engagement.
