Ethan’s Mother Had Never Liked the Idea
Several weeks before the wedding, Ethan’s mother, Patricia, saw the seating plan.
She frowned.
“You’re actually leaving a chair empty?”
Rachel nodded.
“For my dad.”
Patricia hesitated.
“I understand the sentiment.”
Rachel immediately knew what was coming next.
“But?”
Patricia gave an uncomfortable smile.
“Weddings should be happy.”
Rachel waited.
Patricia continued.
“I just don’t know if having a photograph of someone who passed away in the front row sets the right tone.”
Rachel stayed polite.
“It matters to me.”
Patricia nodded.
“Of course.”
Then changed the subject.
Rachel assumed that meant Patricia would respect the decision.
Twenty Minutes Before the Ceremony
Rachel was in the bridal suite when her younger sister Emma rushed inside.
“Rachel.”
Something about her voice made Rachel turn immediately.
“What?”
“You need to come outside.”
“Why?”
Emma hesitated.
“Patricia is moving Dad’s chair.”
Rachel stopped.
“What?”
Emma repeated:
“She’s taking it out of the front row.”
Rachel didn’t even think.
She lifted the skirt of her wedding dress slightly and hurried toward the ceremony area.
