Tyler Said Something Nobody Expected
He sat down at the table.
“You guys fix everything before I have to.”
Their mother looked hurt.
“That’s not true.”
“It is.”
“When my phone bill gets behind, Dad pays it.”
“Because—”
“When I couldn’t make my insurance payment, you covered it.”
“We’re your parents.”
“And when Kayla came home, you charged her rent on day one.”
Nobody answered.
Tyler looked toward his sister.
“How long have you been paying?”
“Fourteen months.”
“How much?”
“Seven hundred now. Six hundred before.”
Tyler shook his head.
“That’s insane.”
Their mother became angry.
“No, it isn’t. She’s an adult.”
Tyler pointed at himself.
“So am I.”
Kayla Made a Decision That Night
She didn’t demand her rent back.
She knew she’d agreed to pay it.
Her parents owned the house.
They were allowed to charge rent.
The issue wasn’t whether they legally could use the money however they wanted.
The issue was whether Kayla wanted to keep participating in the arrangement.
She opened her savings spreadsheet.
She had $11,800.
Not the $15,000 she’d wanted.
But enough.
The next morning she called a friend who needed a roommate.
Three weeks later, Kayla moved out.
Her portion of the new apartment was $860 a month.
More than she had been paying her parents.
Her mother couldn’t understand.
“You’re paying more to live with a stranger?”
Kayla replied:
“Yes.”
“That makes no financial sense.”
Kayla smiled.
“It makes other kinds of sense.”
