Chapter 12 – The Visit
Local authorities and animal welfare inspectors visited Haven Paws.
There was no dramatic raid.
No screaming.
No rows of obviously abused animals.
That confused people at first.
Most animals had food.
Most kennels met basic conditions.
Several were already under veterinary care.
Elisa used that immediately.
“See?”
She told a local reporter.
“The animals are safe.”
But the investigation was no longer only about what inspectors saw that morning.
It concerned fundraising representations.
Records.
Veterinary timelines.
Donation appeals.
Accounting.
And whether animals’ treatment or basic comfort had ever been deliberately delayed to improve fundraising content.
Elisa insisted everything had been misunderstood.
She said critics did not understand rescue work.
She said former volunteers were resentful.
She said photographs naturally showed animals at their worst because that was when they arrived.
Some supporters believed her.
Others did not.
The rescue temporarily stopped accepting new animals.
The blue door remained shut.
The white paw print was still visible from the road.
Underneath it remained the same sentence:
NO ANIMAL LEFT BEHIND.
Someone taped a piece of paper beneath it one night.
It said:
UNLESS THEIR RECOVERY HURTS THE FUNDRAISER.
By morning, the paper was gone.
