Emily Had Been Working Undercover—Sort Of
It wasn’t technically a secret.
Senior management knew exactly who Emily was.
Most employees did not.
She had asked them not to treat her differently.
She rotated through departments.
Housekeeping.
Front desk.
Reservations.
Banquets.
Room service.
That month she was assigned to events.
She wanted to know what employees experienced.
Including difficult guests.
Richard looked at Victoria.
“I wanted my daughter to know what it’s like when someone believes a uniform makes you less important.”
Nobody spoke.
Richard added:
“I didn’t expect her to learn the lesson this literally.”
Victoria’s face went pale.
“I Had No Idea”
That was the first thing Victoria said.
Emily stared at her.
Victoria repeated:
“I genuinely had no idea who you were.”
Emily answered:
“I know.”
Victoria seemed confused by the response.
Emily continued:
“That’s the problem.”
Victoria opened her mouth.
Emily said:
“You think this would have been okay if my dad didn’t own the hotel?”
Victoria immediately replied:
“No.”
Emily waited.
Victoria added:
“Of course not.”
Emily looked at the people around them.
“You told me to remember my place.”
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“I was angry.”
“You assumed I was chasing your son because I serve drinks.”
“I misunderstood.”
“You grabbed something out of my hands.”
Victoria looked down.
Emily continued.
“And then you hit me.”
