The Last Page Wasn’t About the Will

Detectives returned to the documents from the storage unit.

Behind the will was a handwritten note.

Robert Brooks had written:

If anything happens to me, ask Michael about Lake Harris.

Nobody knew what Lake Harris meant.

Natalie had never heard the name.

Eric apparently had.

Police searched Robert’s old business records.

Lake Harris was a development project from fifteen years earlier.

Jonathan Pierce handled the legal paperwork.

Michael Grant handled the finances.

Robert Brooks invested in it.

And one other man was involved.

His name was Samuel Reed.

Samuel disappeared before the project collapsed.

The Estate Fight Was Connected to Something Older

Detectives now suspected the family money dispute was only part of the story.

Robert might have changed his will because he was afraid.

Eric had accidentally reopened something that several people wanted forgotten.

The home confrontation.

The chase through the woods.

The strange sedan.

The hidden documents.

All connected back to a project nobody had discussed in years.

Eric Returned Three Days Later

He walked into the police station voluntarily.

Natalie was already there.

The first thing she did was hug him.

Then she shoved his shoulder lightly.

“You idiot.”

Eric almost laughed.

“You chased me out of your house.”

“You broke into my house.”

“I knocked.”

“You came through the back door.”

“It was open.”

“It was locked.”

They stared at each other.

Then Eric said:

“Okay. That part was bad.”

For the first time in days, Natalie smiled.

But detectives weren’t finished.
