Vanessa Apologized

Olivia returned to the bridal suite.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Vanessa said:

“I was wrong to touch the necklace.”

Olivia nodded.

“And?”

Vanessa almost smiled despite herself.

“And I was wrong to make it sound like you weren’t part of the family.”

Olivia asked:

“Do you actually think Mom is competing with you?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Sometimes.”

At least it was honest.

Olivia replied:

“She can’t compete with you.”

Vanessa looked up.

“She isn’t here.”

That landed harder than Olivia intended.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Olivia continued more gently:

“You get to have Dad now.”

Then she touched the empty space where the necklace had been.

“I get to have memories.”

Vanessa nodded.

For the first time that day, they understood each other.

The Ceremony Happened

Fifteen minutes late.

Olivia walked down the aisle with the wedding party.

No necklace.

No drama.

No one in the audience knew what had happened.

Then, halfway through the reception, Vanessa approached Olivia.

She handed her the velvet box.

Olivia opened it.

The sapphire necklace.

Vanessa said:

“Put it back on.”

Olivia stared at her.

“Seriously?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I was wrong.”

Olivia put it on.

Later that night, they took one final family photograph.

Michael stood between Vanessa and Olivia.

The sapphire was clearly visible.

Nobody asked to remove it.
