Thomas Had Prepared It Months Earlier
Inside the passage police found a small emergency bag.
Bottled water.
Flashlights.
Cash.
A battery-powered radio.
Four rain ponchos.
Several old photographs.
Thomas had clearly prepared the escape route long before Tuesday night.
Rebecca’s sister couldn’t believe it.
“Rebecca knew nothing about this.”
Police weren’t sure that was true.
But Emily’s note suggested at least she understood they were hiding from someone.
Three Days Later, Rebecca Walked Into a Police Station
She arrived alone.
She looked exhausted.
Detectives immediately asked where Thomas and the children were.
Rebecca answered:
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I’ll tell you when you tell me whether that man is in custody.”
“Which man?”
Rebecca gave them a name.
Not Evan Keller.
Not anyone investigators had questioned.
