The Gift Bag Was Gone Too

Under the table had been a large canvas bag meant for transporting the envelopes back to the hotel.

Megan bent down.

Gone.

She asked the venue coordinator.

The woman frowned.

“I saw an older woman collecting some of the cards earlier.”

“What older woman?”

“She said she was the groom’s mother.”

Megan’s stomach dropped.

“Where did she go?”

The coordinator pointed toward a side hallway near the private family rooms.

Megan walked quickly.

Rachel followed.

Neither of them expected what they found.

Carol Was Holding the Bag

Halfway down the hallway, Carol stood beside Ryan.

The canvas gift bag was at her feet.

Ryan had three envelopes in his hands.

One was already open.

Megan stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she said:

“What are you doing?”

Carol looked up.

Her face changed.

Ryan immediately put the envelopes together.

“Megan—”

She walked closer.

“Why do you have our wedding cards?”

Carol answered first.

“I moved them somewhere safe.”

Megan pointed at Ryan.

“Then why is he opening them?”

Ryan said:

“It’s not what it looks like.”

Megan laughed.

“That sentence has never helped anyone.”
