One Year Later

On the first day of Sophie’s sophomore year, she received a message from Ryan.

It was a photograph.

He and Megan were eating dinner at home.

Two frozen pizzas were sitting on the table.

The caption read:

Date night. Definitely no fireworks. Your payment was sent this morning.

Sophie laughed.

Then another message appeared.

Still sorry.

She replied:

I know.

A few minutes later she walked across campus toward class.

Her grandmother’s money had been meant to give her choices.

For a while, other people had taken those choices away.

But Eleanor had planned more carefully than anyone realized.

And Sophie had learned something her grandmother probably already knew.

Saving money was important.

Knowing who you could trust with it was even more important.
