Her Father Finally Told Her the Number
Sophie drove home that night.
She couldn’t wait until the weekend.
Her parents were sitting in the kitchen when she arrived.
Her father, Mark, had spreadsheets open on his laptop.
Sophie didn’t sit down.
“How much was in the account?”
Mark rubbed his forehead.
“About sixty-four thousand.”
“And how much is left?”
Her mother looked away.
Sophie stared at her father.
“How much?”
“Just over eleven.”
Sophie felt dizzy.
More than $50,000 was gone.
“You spent fifty thousand dollars?”
“It wasn’t all the wedding,” Linda said quickly.
Sophie looked at her.
“How much was the wedding?”
Nobody answered.
“HOW MUCH?”
Her father finally spoke.
“Thirty-two.”
Sophie couldn’t believe it.
“You spent thirty-two thousand dollars of my college money on Ryan’s wedding?”
“We helped your brother,” Linda said.
“He and Megan were struggling.”
“So am I!”
“We thought we’d have time to replace it.”
“With what?”
Her parents exchanged a look.
That frightened Sophie more than anything else.
There was no plan.
