But Rachel Made One Decision Mark Hated
She postponed buying a home together indefinitely.
Mark argued that they had already repaired the financial issue.
Rachel disagreed.
“We repaired the account.”
Then:
“We haven’t repaired the trust.”
Mark thought keeping their marriage while refusing to make future plans was unfair.
Rachel thought pretending everything was normal would be worse.
For the first time, they genuinely considered separating.
Three Months Later
Lauren had made every scheduled repayment.
Mark and Rachel were still in counseling.
Diane had apologized.
Sort of.
Her exact words were:
“I should have encouraged Mark to tell you.”
Rachel noticed that was different from:
I shouldn’t have kept the secret.
But she accepted it for what it was.
The bigger surprise was Mark.
During counseling, he admitted something Rachel hadn’t realized.
Helping Lauren had made him feel needed.
Not romantically.
But emotionally.
Lauren had called him during a crisis.
He had liked being the person who could fix it.
And instead of recognizing that boundary, he convinced himself secrecy was kindness.
Rachel told him:
“You protected everybody’s feelings except mine.”
He couldn’t argue with that.
