His First Answer Made It Worse
Mark looked at the screen.
Then at her.
“Can we talk about this tomorrow?”
Rachel actually laughed.
“Tomorrow?”
“It’s our anniversary.”
“Exactly.”
Mark sighed.
“Lauren went through a rough situation.”
Rachel crossed her arms.
“What situation?”
“She lost her job.”
“And?”
“Her rent was behind.”
Rachel stared at him.
“So you paid it?”
Mark hesitated.
That hesitation answered the question.
Rachel asked:
“How many times?”
He looked away.
“A few.”
Rachel held the phone toward him.
“Six.”
Silence.
“You gave your ex-girlfriend eighty-four hundred dollars from our house fund.”
Mark immediately corrected her.
“I didn’t give her the money. She’s paying us back.”
Rachel looked at the account.
“Where are the repayments?”
Mark didn’t answer.
