Rachel Pulled Up the Transactions
She unlocked her phone.
“Show me.”
Mark said:
“Rachel, stop.”
She started scrolling through their statements.
“No. Since everyone here knows more about my marriage than I do, somebody can explain every payment.”
Diane reached across the table.
“Give me that for a second.”
Rachel pulled the phone back.
“No.”
Diane reached again and put her hand around the edge of the phone.
Rachel jerked it back toward herself.
“Do not take my phone.”
Diane responded:
“I’m trying to stop you from humiliating my son in public.”
Rachel stood.
Her chair scraped loudly against the floor.
“Your son took almost ten thousand dollars from our savings for his ex-girlfriend and somehow I’m humiliating him?”
Several people at nearby tables looked over.
Then Mark Reached for the Phone
“Rachel. Enough.”
He reached toward her hand.
Rachel stepped backward.
“Don’t.”
Mark caught the side of the phone for a second.
Rachel pulled it away.
His arm bumped a water glass.
The glass tipped across the table.
Water spilled everywhere.
Diane stood abruptly.
Her chair knocked backward onto the carpet.
Nothing serious happened.
Nobody was hurt.
But the sound caused half the restaurant to look toward them.
The manager started walking over.
Rachel stared at Mark.
Her voice became quieter.
“Do not grab things out of my hand.”
Mark immediately let go.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”
“I didn’t say you were.”
That somehow made the silence even worse.
