Two Years Later

Daniel and Megan eventually married.

This time there were only thirty-two guests.

The photographer asked:

“Who do you want in the first family photo?”

Megan answered before Daniel could.

“All three of us.”

Lily stood between them.

Later, the photographer took photographs of Daniel and Megan alone.

No one objected.

That had never really been the problem.

The problem had been what the first decision represented.

Years later, people in the family still disagreed about whether Daniel had done the right thing by stopping the original ceremony.

Daniel himself admitted he sometimes wondered whether there had been another way.

But there was one thing he didn’t regret.

When his daughter asked whether she belonged in his new family, she never had to wonder what his answer was.
