Lily Had Already Changed Out of Her Dress

Daniel found Lily in a small room near the venue kitchen.

She had changed into jeans and a sweater.

Her wedding dress was folded over a chair.

Daniel’s heart sank.

“What are you doing?”

“I want Mom to pick me up.”

“You don’t have to leave.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“But I don’t want to ruin Megan’s pictures.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“You didn’t ruin anything.”

Lily shrugged.

“She doesn’t want me in them.”

Daniel was quiet.

Then Lily said something that hurt even more.

“It’s okay, Dad. When you guys have your own kids, it’ll probably be different anyway.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Where did you get that idea?”

She looked away.

“Megan said once that she’d never been a mom before.”

Daniel remembered the conversation.

At the time it had sounded harmless.

Now every small comment felt different.
